TEHRAN, 9 March 2007 — Former Iranian President and Chairman of Expediency Discernment Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani described the role of the Arab countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, in settling the problems faced currently by the region as very important. Rafsanjani said that the past has proved the importance of cooperation between Iran and Saudi Arabia in solving diplomatic and economic problems.
“The security in the region will be stabilized with cooperation among the countries in the region,” Rafsanjani made his statements yesterday in a meeting with Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf ibn Alawi, who is currently visiting Tehran.
The former president expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation in the Middle East particularly in Iraq. He stressed the need for cooperation amidst the countries in the region in order to achieve security and stability. Rafsanjani expressed his hope that the Makkah agreement would strengthen the solidarity between the Palestinian factions, the Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday.
