BURAIDAH, 2 April 2007 — A female camel here has shown no interest in mating with males in her herd. The camel’s owner paraded several males in front of her, hoping that she might like one of them, the daily Okaz reported yesterday. After exhausting all attempts, he finally took the camel to a veterinarian at Qassim University. The vet diagnosed the camel as having a lack of ovarian activity and after treatment of several days, he told the owner that he could take her home. The treatment worked and the male-avoiding camel was soon pregnant and she recently gave birth to a healthy young male. The owner was thrilled that his camel had finally passed the stage of “infertility” — as he described her condition — and distributed sweets to staff at the university hospital.

Man Steals Money to Pays Traffic Fines

QURAYAT, 2 April 2007 — A young Saudi man got in a bit of hot water after he accessed a citizen’s bank account and used the funds from the account to pay his traffic fines, the daily Al-Riyadh reported. The man claimed that the traffic violations, totaling to SR7,000, were not his so he refused to pay them with his own money. After the breach was discovered, authorities traced the violation back to the thief who was promptly arrested. The victim of the electronic fraud was kind enough to drop the charges after his money was returned and the small-time crook paid his fines with his own money.

Heartfelt Words of Love, Literally

MAKKAH, 2 April 2007 — An Asian worker at a boy’s school in the holy city missed his wife back home so much that he went a little nutty, cut himself and used his own blood to write words of love to his dearly missed partner, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. The man was detained and then committed to a mental institution. When he’s well enough to be released, police say they will do him a favor and reunite him with his wife through the magic of deportation. After all, if you’re using your blood as ink, you are more or less violating the terms of your work contract.
