ISLAMABAD, 5 April 2007 — A three-member panel of the Supreme Court of Pakistan headed by Acting Chief Justice Rana Bhagwandas yesterday charged seven senior officials of the Islamabad administration and police with manhandling suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry on March 13.
The panel gave its ruling on a report submitted by Peshawar High Court Judge Ejaz Afzal Khan that found Chief Islamabad Commissioner Khalid Pervez, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali, Inspector General of Islamabad Police Iftikhar Ahmad, Senior Superintendent of Police Zafar Iqbal, Deputy Superintendent of Police Jamil Hashmi, Station House Officer of Secretariat Police Station Rukhsar Mehdi and Assistant Sub-Inspector Siraj, guilty.
The seven officials were allegedly found guilty of manhandling Justice Chaudhry while he was on his way to the top court to attend the hearing of his case.
Justice Afzal gathered sufficient incriminating evidence against the seven from witnesses’ statements, TV footage, press reports and other sources. The panel has adjourned its proceedings until April 11.
