JEDDAH, 11 April 2007 — The Third International Scientific Radiology Conference is focusing on three major topics that have not been discussed in previous rounds.

The Saudi Radiology Society has organized the four-day event, which began on Monday at King Abdulaziz University.

The first of the three sessions is tackling the application of therapeutic radiology and interventional radiology in peripheral vascular vessels using both balloon stenting and laser angiography. The second session is focusing on radiotherapy in treating cancers, particularly breast and prostate cancer. The third discussion is regarding the application of nuclear medicine in the field of diagnostic radiology, especially the usage of Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

The event also covered subjects relating to radiology, such as the CT scan, MRI, X-ray and neurological diseases.

Chairman of the conference and of the society, Dr. Sattam Linjawi, said, “There should be continuous education of radiologists and technologists because this would improve the practice of radiology in the Kingdom. We also call for the need to have up-to-date radiological equipment, like CT scans and MRIs, at all major hospitals.”

He added, “When you have good technology, you have accurate diagnosis and as a result you have less complications and you are less likely to make the wrong diagnosis.”

He lauded cooperation between the Saudi Radiology Society and the Saudi Council of Health Specialties. “The cooperation will give the society the chance to ensure that doctors are up-to-date in knowledge before they are given licenses,” Linjawi said.

The Saudi Radiology Society is involved in reviewing the curricula of private medical technology institutes. It also continuously reviews the curricula and courses at King Abdulaziz University’s Faculty of Medicine.

The conference invited 70 speakers from outside the Kingdom to present 60 work papers. A medical exhibition displaying modern radiology equipment from 30 companies is being held on the sidelines of the conference.
