BEIRUT, 7 June 2007 — Tunisian singer Marwan Ali won the “Super Star” title of the Arab World recently. In the final round held on Tuesday in Beirut, Marwan beat Saad Al-Mujarrad, the Arabic daily Al-Watan reported yesterday.
The only female candidate who had a chance to claim the title was Tunisian Yusra Mahrus, but she was eliminated in the semifinal rounds as Marwan and Saad had greater number of viewers’ votes in the competition, which is the Arabic version of the US show “American Idol.”
Marwan’s victory marks the first time a Tunisian has won the title. Lebanon’s Future TV will give the singer a recording contract.
