JEDDAH, 6 April 2008 — Sri Lanka’s new Ambassador Abdul Ajeed Mohammed Marleen presented his credentials to Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal on Wednesday.
Yesterday, he visited Sri Lankan International School in Jeddah and talked to teachers and students. He was given a red carpet welcome as he walked into the school premises with the school band playing. Students of the primary section greeted the new envoy with a garland.
Principal Fareeda H. Wahab and Azmy Anverdeen, chairman of the school board of management, outlined the activities of the school. Pledging his fullest support to the progress of the school, Marleen said he would give a free hand to the principal and the board of management of the institution to run the institution in an independent and efficient manner. He said the parents, teachers and the diplomatic mission should work as a team for the betterment of the student community. He appreciated the fact that the school had earned a name for its outstanding achievements in the academic field.
Praising the efforts of the principal toward the progress of the school, Marleen said that he knew the achievements she had made at the Colombo-based Muslim Ladies College. “I am sure, the school will march ahead under her leadership,” the ambassador said.
He thanked the Kingdom for allowing foreign students to pursue education in their own cultural environment.
The ambassador also visited the Sri Lankan Consulate where Consul General Abdul Latiff Mohammed Lafeer received him. Marleen addressed the members of the mission and outlined the plans he had in mind for the improvement in working of the missions. He also attended a community dinner.
He visited Madinah and held a meeting with Sri Lankan Expatriates Society.
