RIYADH: A car belonging to the Bangladeshi Embassy that was stolen earlier this month has been found some 30 kilometers away in a Riyadh suburb. The car was found badly damaged and had bloodstains in it.
“No one was in the vehicle when it was recovered from a barren plot of land,” said Haroonor Rashid, spokesman for the Bangladeshi Embassy.
He added that the car was stolen from Al-Warood Quarters in broad daylight when the driver came out leaving the keys in the ignition.
“The thieves are still at large. The mystery surrounding the huge amount of blood found inside the abandoned car is still unresolved,” he said.
Rashid said the thieves might have taken the car for joyriding. “The car was found without its diplomatic plate. The car is so badly damaged that the cost of repairs will exceed its value and hence the insurance company has declared the vehicle a total loss,” he said.
A number of car rental companies have recently complained about a growing number of car thefts in the city. Most cars are later found damaged, indicating that joy riders carry out most thefts. Others steal cars for expensive parts.
Bakhtiyar Khan, a senior PR consultant for Hana Al-Meshari Company, said two cars belonging to his company were recently found abandoned in separate remote areas of the city.
He expressed concern about the growing number of car thefts in the city.
A source at Budget Rent-A-Car said the company recovered one of its two vehicles that were recently stolen.
