ABHA: In one of the odder signs that the US may be losing its luster on the world’s stage, a 40-year-old Saudi woman from a small town in Asir province has decided to change her name from “America” to something else. America told Arab News that she would be going this week to the local Civil Rights Department to change her name. She did not announce what her new name would be, and didn’t explain why she has decided to do this now — perhaps she just assumes everyone would know why. And in one of the odder signs that Saudi Arabia is increasingly looking for closer ties with the East, America’s sister “Asia” has decided to keep her name. The parents of the two women were not around to ask them why they decided to name their children after entries in an Atlas.
Sidelight: ‘America’ wants name change, ‘Asia’ cool
