JEDDAH: Saudi Telecom Company (STC) yesterday blamed two construction contractors for the disruption of its mobile phone and DSL services for more than two hours during the day.
A statement issued by the company said the contractors cut its fiber-optic cables, ignoring the indicators of such cables and safety conditions. It also alleged that the contractors were working without permission from relevant authorities.
“The contractors were working on two projects for other parties,” the statement said without mentioning the names of the contractors.
One contractor was working in a site between Taif and Makkah while the other was working in another site between Buraidah and Madinah.
STC noticed partial disruption of services on its second generation mobile phone network and broadband lines through its system and instructed technical teams to rectify the glitch as quickly as possible.
The statement said the company was able to bring the services to normal within two hours. “We have started taking legal measures against the two contractors,” it added.
A high-level STC source told Arab News that the company would provide broadband services throughout the Kingdom and other countries of the region. “We have won a million clients for our Afaq DSL service within a short span,” the source said.
The source said the DSL service offers comprehensive Internet service solutions by opening Internet lines round the clock with high speed and quality. “We provide Internet service to five million Afaq DSL users across the Kingdom,” he explained.
Last Saturday, STC introduced for the first time the Purenet service to families throughout the Kingdom. The new service enables STC clients to surf Internet safely.
The company has introduced a new firewall technology to prevent viewing unwanted sites that violate Islamic teachings.
He said the company has taken the initiative to improve Internet services by acquiring modern technology. “We try our best to meet the requirements of our clients,” the source said.
