JEDDAH: The Jeddah municipality has allocated SR90 million to maintain the city’s street lights over the next three years.
Anwar Nuri, director of the lighting unit at the municipality, said old bulbs would be replaced with new ones that cost less, are energy efficient and give better illumination.
Nuri said the project would cover a number of districts, including Safa, Marwa, Faisaliyah, Rabwah, Bawadi, Aziziah, Mushrefah, Rehab and Bani Malik.
Nuri said the city’s street lights were in a bad shape. Problems included severed cables, and damaged posts and bulbs. He added that there are instances of members of the public illegally taking electric connections from street lamps for domestic use resulting in the network becoming overburdened.
He said much of the damage was caused by traffic accidents, adding that there were 47 car collisions with lampposts last year.
