JEDDAH: The posh residential neighborhood of Al-Rawdah has been chosen for the execution of a pilot project to clean the area and spread a culture of environmental cleanliness among its residents.
A team comprising municipal officials, the Al-Rawdah District Council and the Environment Committee at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) has been established to work out mechanisms for the execution of the scheme.
An MoU for the launch of the project was recently signed at the JCCI by Dr. Muhammad Mustapha Al-Juhani, chairman of the Environment Committee, and Muhammad ibn Hassan Al-Sayigh, president of the Al-Rawdah District Council.
Al-Juhani said the committee would work to implement the project, which is the beginning of an ambitious plan to keep Jeddah permanently clean. “The committee will cooperate with international environment organizations and bring their expertise to local projects,” he added. He said the Al-Rawdah District Council was keen to make the district a model residential quarter in cleanliness and added that the council would carry out a number of programs to upgrade environmental safety and hygiene in the area.
“Al-Rawdah is qualified to be Jeddah’s model district. The project will make it a perfect district in terms of public health and environment,” Al-Juhani said.
He added that an awareness program would be formulated to enlighten residents about the importance of maintaining a clean environment for future generations, reducing pollution and attracting people to undertake voluntary work in favor of the city.
Al-Sayigh said the MoU would also help shed light on the project in the media and asked other districts to follow suit. He said workshops and training sessions would be organized to spread awareness about keeping the environment clean.
