RIYADH: The board of trustees of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) met here yesterday and approved the university’s strategic vision for up to the year 2020.

The meeting, which was chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, also set up four permanent panels: Executive Committee, Investment Committee, Auditing Committee, and Membership Committee.

The board also approved the appointment of some faculty members, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The board will hold its next meeting on Oct. 16-17 soon after the opening of the university’s campus in Thuwal, near Jeddah.

King Abdullah expressed his confidence in the board members and commended their efforts to achieve the university’s vision. The meeting approved KAUST’s budget for the year ending on June 30, 2010.

The board members are: Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Ali Al-Naimi (chairman), Prince Khaled bin Abdullah, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, Prince Mansour bin Abdullah, IDB President Ahmed Mohammed Ali, Chairman of Vanguard Group John Brennan, President and CEO of Saudi Aramco Khalid Al-Falih, Chairman and CEO of Schlumberger Andrew Gould, Director General of European Organization for Nuclear Research Rolf-Dieter Heuer, President of Abdul Latif Jameel Company Mohammed Jameel, Chairperson and CEO of Olayan Financing Company Lubna Al-Olayan and Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah.

Addressing the meeting, Al-Naimi said: “We have drawn out a complete picture of the university and its strategic vision for up to 2020.”

He thanked the king for appointing the board members to run KAUST.
