Imaginative car thief runs out of luck
MADINAH: A thief employed a simple ploy to steal a car in Madinah on Monday. He knocked at the door of a house early in the morning and told the child who opened the door that he was a friend of his brother and wanted to borrow his car to take a close relative to hospital as his car was being repaired. Instead of waking up his sleeping brother, the child handed the car’s key to the thief. The thief then got into the car and drove just a little bit when he collided with another car and ran off on foot. The car was returned to its owner, albeit slightly damaged, Al-Yaum daily reported on Tuesday.
A child’s play turns painful in Qurayat
QURAYAT: The Civil Defense was called to deal with a bizarre incident in Qurayat, in the Northern Border province on Monday. The rescue service was called to help a boy who had been playing in a heap of scrap metal, Al-Yaum daily reported on Tuesday. Metal rings had somehow become stuck to his fingers. Not only could he not remove them but they were also causing him terrible pain. Instead of rushing the boy to hospital, his parents called the Civil Defense. Rescue workers were able to remove the rings in a matter of minutes.
Three days’ salary goes up in smoke<
RIYADH: An employee at the Health Directorate in Riyadh had three days of salary deducted for smoking in his office. Hisham Nadira, general director of the Health Affairs Department, said the employee’s conduct was unacceptable and a violation of government orders. He added that all officials risk being punished, regardless of their rank, if they break the smoking ban. Nadira believes the punishment will deter others from smoking, the Al-Madinah newspaper reported.
Taiwanese dies after seeing ‘Avatar’
TAIPEI: A 42-year-old Taiwanese man with a history of high blood pressure has died of a stroke likely triggered by over-excitement from watching the blockbuster “Avatar” in 3D, a doctor said Tuesday. The man, identified only by his surname Kuo, started to feel unwell during the screening earlier this month in the northern city of Hsinchu. Kuo, who suffered from hypertension, was unconscious when he arrived at the Nan Men General Hospital and a scan showed that his brain was hemorrhaging, Dr. Peng Chin-chih said. “It’s likely that the over-excitement from watching the movie triggered his symptoms,” he told AFP. Kuo died 11 days later from the brain hemorrhage, and the China Times newspaper said it was the first death linked to watching James Cameron’s science-fiction epic “Avatar.” Film blogging sites have reported complaints of headaches, dizziness, nausea and blurry eyesight from viewers of “Avatar” and other 3D movies.
