The Madinah Traffic Department has set up nine fixed cameras in addition to five mobile ones to detect road offenses.

The fixed cameras have been set up on major roads and intersections, including the Second Ring Road, Hijrah Expressway, Al-Oyoun Road, and Al-Salam Road, Al-Watan daily reported on Monday.

Col. Hamad Al-Harbi, acting director of traffic in Madinah, said that about 200 locations in the holy city will be covered by the electronic traffic monitoring system once the system is implemented in full.

“The secret traffic police unit will play a vital role in implementing the Saher system effectively,” he added.

Director of Madinah Police Maj.Gen. Iyad Al-Sarhani said the Saher system aimed to safeguard the lives and property of citizens and residents due to the huge increase in fatalities and injuries from road accidents.

“With the introduction of the automatic monitoring system, we want to improve road safety standards and facilitate smooth movement of traffic, in addition to implementing traffic regulations meticulously and inform offenders of their violations at the earliest possible opportunity,” he said.

Al-Sarhani urged all drivers to update their personal information by contacting the Traffic, Civil Affairs or Passport authorities.

The second phase of the Saher system involved a soft launch in Madinah and Al-Qassim provinces. It was implemented in the Makkah Region on Sunday. It was launched in Riyadh three months ago in the first phase.
