Acting police spokesman First Lt. Nawwaf Al-Bouq said the campaign would target all local residents of Jeddah via e-mail and text messages with a view to making them real partners in maintaining safety and security.

"The security work is no longer the unilateral work of the police alone. All residents should participate in this process," he said.

Al-Bouq said the campaign would provide advice to residents on how to safeguard their personal belongings, especially when they travel out of the country.

“We tell them in a simple and clear language not to leave their valuable things at home when they travel out. They should also use modern warning systems such as alarms and CCTV,” he said.

Al-Bouq asked residents to make sure that their water taps are tightly closed, the electricity is switched off and their gas cylinders are secured before they leave for their summer vacation.

“People should leave their cars off when they park them even for a very short period. They should turn the engine off and take their car keys with them,” he warned, adding that many cars were stolen because the keys were left in the ignition.
