Hellickson (1-0) allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings, helping the Rays win for the ninth time in the last 10 games. Dan Wheeler got the final two outs for his third save.

Jason Kubel homered and had two RBIs for the Twins, while Carl Pavano (13-7) gave up four runs and nine hits over six innings. He had been 8-0 in his previous 10 starts.

Twins catcher Joe Mauer was out of the lineup for the second straight game after receiving a cortisone shot in his right shoulder on Saturday. The reigning American League MVP, dealing with tendinitis since he took a foul tip off the shoulder last month, could start Tuesday.

At Bostson, Fausto Carmona rebounded from his worst start of the season with seven solid innings, and Shelley Duncan had a career-high four hits to lift the Indians.

The victory proved costly, though. Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana was taken off the field on a stretcher with his left leg in an air cast after blocking home in the seventh inning.

Carmona (11-8) allowed only two runs and eight hits, and Chris Gomez worked the ninth for his 13th save as the Indians won their third straight road game.

Adrian Beltre hit two homers and drove in five runs for Boston, which lost first baseman Kevin Youkilis to injury. John Lackey (10-6) took the loss.

At New York, Travis Snider hit two of an AL record-tying six doubles in a seven-run fifth inning, and the Blue Jays prolonged Alex Rodriguez’s search for his 600th homer.

Snider began the barrage of doubles with a leadoff hit against A.J. Burnett (9-9) and finished it with a drive off Sergio Mitre . In between, Fred Lewis , Jose Bautista , Vernon Wells and Aaron Hill also had doubles to match the Washington Senators, who had six against the Boston Red Sox on June 9, 1934, and the Texas Rangers on July 31, 2002, against the Yankees.

The Yankees rallied from an 8-2 deficit but fell into a tie for first place in the AL East with Tampa Bay, which beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2. New York dropped two of three games this weekend against the Rays. The Yankees had been alone in first since June 20.

Morrow (8-6) won his third straight start, and Kevin Gregg earned his 24th save.

At Oakland, California, Trevor Cahill threw a three-hitter for his first complete game, Rajai Davis hit a two-run homer and the Athletics ended the Royals’ three-game winning streak.

Matt Watson , Kevin Kouzmanoff and Coco Crisp also drove in runs for the A’s, who won their fifth game of the last six played at home. Cahill (11-4) recorded the A’s third consecutive complete game by scattering four walks and striking out three.

Mitch Maier , Wilson Betemit and Chris Getz collected the only hits for the Royals, who were shut out for the first time since July 4 and the fifth time overall.

Royals’ starter Brian Bannister (7-11) lost his sixth straight decision and is winless since June 23. He allowed five runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out four.
