- MOENCHENGLADBACH, Germany: A last-minute goal to beat New Zealand 4-3 lifted surprising England into the Champions Trophy field hockey final against two-time defending champ Australia on Saturday.
England, which had never previously finished higher than fifth in the tournament, didn't post a win until its fourth game on Thursday, and then achieved successive wins in the tournament for the first time in nine years.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Germany's final hopes were undone in a 1-0 loss to the eight-time champion Netherlands, a result which saved the Dutch from their worst trophy placing since 1986.
Spain, the Olympic silver medalist, also missed out on the final when it lost 3-1 to Australia, which completed the round robin with a perfect fifth win from five matches.
