Breaking the Silence (Shovrim Shtika) says such treatment is standard practice and called on the Israeli Army to acknowledge this after one of its ex-soldiers, Eden Abergil, uploaded pictures of her alongside bound Palestinian prisoners on the social networking site Facebook. The incident sparked outrage across the world and drew comparisons with Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib prison scandal.

However, Breaking the Silence, an organization of veteran Israeli soldiers that collects testimonies from troops who served in occupied Palestinian territories during the second Intifada, said that while the Israeli Army claimed to be "shocked" by Abergil's photos, it did not represent "the ugly behavior of just one person."

"We suggest that the IDF (army) spokesman not insult the intelligence of the Israeli public, and clarify that it is a widespread phenomenon, not an aberration caused by a single soldier," said a statement from the organization.

It added that its photos, which includes several graphic pictures of soldiers posing next to the bodies of suspected Palestinian fighters as well as next to handcuffed detainees, were taken during the last 10 years and represented only a preliminary batch.

Abergil, 20, appeared perplexed in a radio interview by the uproar over the photographs. "What's wrong with that? I don't understand," she told Israel's army radio.
