Garza (12-7) went 0-2 in three starts after throwing Tampa Bay’s first no-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Detroit on July 26. The right-hander, who had 10 strikeouts and two walks, struck out AL batting leader Josh Hamilton with runners on second and third to end the third.

Evan Longoria came within a homer of the cycle and had three RBIs for the Rays, who have won the first two games of the three-game series in a potential playoff matchup. The victory gave Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon his 400th career win.

Carl Crawford also drove in three runs, including a two-run homer during a five-run seventh that extended Tampa Bay’s lead to 10-0. The Rays are tied for first place in the AL East with the New York Yankees.

The AL West-leading Rangers remained eight games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels.

Crawford and Longoria hit consecutive RBI triples, and Carlos Pena drove in a run with a double off Tommy Hunter (9-2) as the Rays took a 3-0 lead in the first.

Yankees 6  Tigers 2: At New York, CC Sabathia was dominant at home again and Nick Swisher had a two-run single, leading New York to a victory over Detroit.

Curtis Granderson homered against his former team and Robinson Cano connected from the cleanup spot for the Yankees. Cano moved up a spot in the order because Alex Rodriguez sat out after experiencing soreness in his left calf and leaving the team’s loss to Detroit on Monday night. An MRI on Tuesday revealed a low-grade strain and he is day to day.

Sabathia (16-5) became the AL’s first 16-game winner and improved to 14-0 in his last 19 regular-season starts at home, a streak that began with seven scoreless innings against his opponent Tuesday, Justin Verlander , on July 18, 2009.

The big lefty gave up solo homers to former Yankees prospect Austin Jackson and Brandon Inge in seven strong innings. Sabathia also struck out nine and walked three, ending the Tigers’ three-game winning streak.

Twins 7 White Sox 6, 10 innings: At Minneapolis, Jim Thome hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning against the team that decided not to bring him back this season, sending Minnesota to a victory over Chicago that stretched its AL Central lead to four games.

After Delmon Young’s leadoff single against Matt Thornton (3-4), Thome smashed an 0-1 pitch and sent it sailing over the right-field bleachers to send his new team and the fans at sold-out Target Field into a frenzy. Thome chucked his helmet into the air as he eagerly approached the mob at the plate.

Alexei Ramirez hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th, as Twins relievers

Red Sox 6  Angels 0: At Boston, Ryan Kalish hit his first career grand slam and Clay Buchholz pitched seven sharp innings to lead Boston over Los Angeles.

Darnell McDonald also homered for the Red Sox, hitting one over the Green Monster and through the back windshield of a Toyota parked on the top floor of the garage across Lansdowne Street. Another would-be homer, by Adrian Beltre , was brought back in when Angels right fielder Torii Hunter reached into the bullpen to grab it.

Buchholz (14-5) allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three for his fourth consecutive victory and Boston’s first shutout since Buchholz helped blank the Dodgers on June 20.

Athletics 6 Blue Jays 2: At Oakland, California, Dallas Braden pitched three-hit ball for seven innings, Jack Cust drove in the go-ahead run and Oakland ended a four-game losing streak by beating Toronto.

Coco Crisp had three hits and an RBI, Daric Barton and Mark Ellis each drove in a run and the A’s won for the 11th time in 16 home games.

Braden (8-8) allowed two runs, one earned, and improved to 4-1 since coming off the disabled list July 20. Michael Wuertz recorded four outs for his sixth save.

Mariners 4  Orioles 0: At Baltimore, Luke French took a one-hitter into the eighth inning and substitute starter Matt Tuiasosopo homered and drove in four runs to lead Seattle past Baltimore.

Tuiasosopo had an RBI double in the fifth and a three-run homer in the ninth. He started in place of Ryan Langerhans , who was a late scratch with a severe headache.

Royals 2  Indians 1: At Kansas City, Missouri, Zack Greinke pitched six strong innings and Wilson Betemit and Yuniesky Betancourt homered as Kansas City beat Cleveland.

Greinke, who won the 2009 AL Cy Young Award, is 7-3 in his past 12 starts after starting the season 1-8. Greinke (8-11) held the Indians to one run and five hits over six innings, lowering his ERA to 3.90.

Betancourt homered in the fifth to tie the score at 1. Betemit put the Royals ahead to stay by leading off the sixth with his sixth home run.

Indians rookie Jeanmar Gomez (3-1) was handed his first loss in five big league starts. Cleveland wasted several scoring opportunities, stranding 12 and going 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

Joakim Soria earned his 34th save, which tied for the AL lead, in 36 opportunities. He has converted 27 consecutive chances.
