- NEWCASTLE: Haile Gebrselassie won the Great North Run at his first attempt on Sunday, finishing 1 minute, 50 seconds ahead of Kiplimo Kimutai of Kenya.
He finished the half marathon in 59 minutes, 33 seconds.
The 37-year-old Ethiopian, widely considered one of the greatest distance runners ever, broke away at the halfway point of the 30th edition of the road race in northeast England.
Gebrselassie is the marathon world-record holder and two-time Olympic 10,000-meter champion.
The women's race was won by another Ethiopian, Berhane Adere, who finished ahead of duo Ana Dulce Felix and Marisa Barros.
