Washington this week imposed travel and financial sanctions on the eight Iranians, accusing them of taking part in human rights abuses during the turmoil following Iran’s June 2009 presidential election.

Iranian state TV claims the sanctions are evidence Washington has been supporting the postelection unrest.

The TV on Friday cited foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast as saying “this proves the US supports lawbreaking ... activities” in Iran.

The eight include Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard.
