The UNHCR expressed concern about the fresh incident and displacement of civilians in the northern town of Birao last Sunday. UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said the agency was so far unable to say how many girls were abducted or villagers displaced due to the remote locations.

The Lord’s Resistance Army’s terror against civilians has intensified since September with attacks in Central African Republic, Congo and southern Sudan, the UNHCR said.

The LRA has carried out at least six attacks and three ambushes in northeastern Congo in the past few weeks. In the village of Nambiongo, 21 people were killed and 2,500 displaced, the UNHCR said.

In southern Sudan, the LRA attacked the villages of Ribodo and Nahua in Western Equatoria State on Sept. 4, killing eight and displacing 2,600, the agency said.

The Ugandan rebel group has carried out more than 240 deadly attacks this year, killing at least 344 people.

“Insecurity and poor infrastructure hinder assessment of needs and delivery of aid to affected communities, many of whose members are traumatized and too scared to return to their farms to cultivate their land,” Edwards said in a briefing Friday. “As you can imagine, this means they will continue to depend on outside help for the foreseeable future.”
