- DHAKA: Bangladesh said on Thursday a tropical storm was churning in the Bay of Bengal and advised ports to hoist warning signals and all fishing boats and trawlers to stay in shelter until further notice.
The meteorological department said the storm, Giri packing winds up to 88 km per hour was 505 km southwest of the country’s main Chittagong port at 0900 GMT on Thursday.
“The storm is likely to intensify and move in a north or northwesterly direction,” said a statement from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Storm tracker tropicalstormrisk.com said currently the storm is poised to hit Bangladesh-Myanmar cost in next 48 hours.
Nearly half a million Bangladeshis were left homeless by three days of storms that killed at least 15 people earlier this month.
Storms batter the poor south Asian country every year. Cyclone Sidr which killed nearly 3,500 people and displaced some two million in November 2007, was the most severe in last five years.
