This follows scans on both knees during the World Cup. Collingwood played in four of England's World Cup group matches but was dropped from key matches against South Africa and West Indies that England won. Against Bangladesh, Collingwood was relegated from his normal No. 5 or 6 to No. 8 in the batting order as he struggled with form.

The surgery is set to threaten Collingwood's participation in next month's Indian Premier League, where he has signed for the Rajasthan Royals. “Paul felt some discomfort in his left knee during the group stages of the World Cup and a precautionary scan ahead of England’s match against South Africa showed no significant damage,” said ECB chief medical officer Nick Peirce.

"However, further assessment suggests a loose piece of cartilage floating in his knee that will require surgical removal. “We’ll be able to establish a definitive rehabilitation timescale following surgery but we expect Paul to make a full recovery in due course.”
