“(The pilot) shut down the engine and diverted to FCO (Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport),” said Abdullah Al-Ajhar, Saudia VP for public relations, in a statement to Arab News on Saturday. “On the ground, staff found the engine condition completely normal and a faulty engine-overheat detection electronic card was the cause of the nuisance warning.”

This emergency landing came a day after Jeddah-NYC Saudia flight carrying 225 passengers landed in Cairo after one of the Boeing 777’s engines was shut down. The flight was resumed seven hours later and arrived safely at JFK with no further incidents.

According to Al-Ajhar, the cause of that emergency landing was because of ice formation causing a valve “that regulates bleed pressure and provides hot air on demand to the leading edge of the control” to freeze into a closed position.

“Because of ice en route, and in accordance with Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) procedure, the aircraft diverted to Cairo for Saudia Aerospace Engineering Industries staff to manually lock the valve in the open position, and the flight continued to JFK normally,” he added.

Modern commercial aircraft are designed to be able to fly and land safely on one engine and offer triple-redundancy hydraulic systems to ensure pilots can control and land planes in the event of emergencies.
