Paul White, also known as Lord Hanningfield, was sentenced to nine months in prison for falsely claiming thousands of pounds in compensation from taxpayers. Three appeals court judges denied him permission to challenge the conviction, saying his trial had been conducted properly, "however sad may be the end of what was otherwise a distinguished career in public service."

Several lawmakers have been jailed as part of Britain's parliamentary expenses scandal, which revealed that politicians were routinely billing the public for extravagant extras.

Among the most notorious abuses were bills for second homes, horse manure and pornographic movies.
