Singh had argued he wasn’t born until 1951, which would give the third-generation officer another year as army chief. He had entered the date on his school records and sought support from three former chief justices in arguing his case.

Press Trust of India says the Defense Ministry consulted the Law Ministry and attorney general’s office. They advised that the 1950 date entered on his application to the army itself should be followed.
