Copper fell 1 percent Thursday to settle at $4.3835 a pound, its second day of losses.

An HSBC survey says China’s manufacturing production fell in July for the first time in a year. The decline comes after the government took new steps to slow the country’s rapid economic growth and curb inflation.

Markit Economics Ltd. says European manufacturing grew at the slowest pace in 22 months in July.

Investors are worried that demand for copper and other industrial metals may weaken in the months ahead.

Other commodities are mixed as investors keep an eye on debt crisis talks in Europe and the United States.
