- WASHINGTON: The US Justice Department says more than 70 people connected to a Mexican drug gang have been arrested during the past two days in the US, culminating a 20-month probe that has seized more than 12 tons of narcotics.
Deputy Attorney General James Cole says a law enforcement effort called Project Delirium has stripped La Familia Michoacana of “its manpower, its deadly product, and its profit.” The department says 1,985 arrests have been made over the 20 months.
Drug Enforcement Administration chief Michele Leonhart says Project Delirium grew out of an earlier multiagency operation against this violent Mexican drug gang.
Project Delirium has seized $62 million in US currency, 2,773 pounds of methamphetamine, 6,001 pounds of cocaine, 1,005 pounds of heroin and 14,818 pounds of marijuana.
