- BEIRUT: Activists say Syrian troops have stormed a northwestern village and are making sweeping arrests.
- The army has been conducting operations in the region for weeks to crush growing dissent against the regime during the country’s four-month-old uprising.
The Local Coordination Committees is an umbrella group that helps organize and document the protests in Syria. The group said tanks shelled a telecommunications tower in Sarjeh village and cut electrify and water supplies early Sunday.
The LCC also said authorities detained scores of people in the capital, Damascus, and its suburbs late Saturday. Renowned movie producer Shadi Abu-Fakhr was believed to be among them.
