A United Nations report says at least 47 women were subjected to rape and other sexual assaults over a two-day period from Dec. 31, 2010, to Jan. 1, 2011.

It says 100 soldiers attacked the North Kivu villages of Bushani and Kalambahiro with whips, machetes and rifles, and accused the inhabitants of supporting enemy forces.

The report released Friday says witnesses and victims identified the perpetrators as government troops but the Congolese military has failed to cooperate with investigators.

Armed groups in Congo have frequently used rape as a tool of war against perceived enemy supporters.
