In an exclusive chat with Arab News, she said: “I am totally grateful for having the opportunity to play music to rooms full of people because after all, it is a very privileged position to be in. You potentially have the power to manipulate the energy of the room, to make someone’s night, to make them laugh, cry or smile and to make them remember a piece of music with good memories is an amazing thing. Just to be able to share music with people is an amazing thing.”
 

I would like to think that the reason MoS (Ministry of Sound) have taken me under their wing is because I signify what they do best. That is to say I represent an audience that isn’t afraid to experiment with new styles and old. MoS has always tried to lead from the front and I have always strived to do that. I am grateful that they have the platform worldwide in order for me to show my abilities and diversity in all that’s good with the dance music scene.
 

For me, my musical journey started when I was 10-years-old and was given an album by A Tribe Called Quest. I loved it and was blown away instantly. I loved the samples in the beats and was interested in where they came from and what they were. I used to go into school and try to show my friends this music that I thought was amazing and none of them would understand. I found myself unable to understand why they did not feel the same way as I did. From then I noticed I had a love for music that not everyone did. I continued to learn about hip hop, jazz and soul music and I grew up in a very small town in Scotland. After finishing high school I went on to college to study radio production and then audio engineering so that I could learn about how sounds were made and the science behind music. I bought a pair of second hand decks when I was 19 and set out to teach myself how to mix. I did not know anyone who was a DJ, so I was not lucky enough to have been taught by another person but I think this made me have a unique style of mixing that I have today. I moved to Edinburgh for a few years and now I live in Glasgow, where the music scene is diverse and the people are great.
 

I would love to play in Brazil. I love the music that comes from Brazil and I would love to play there myself. I would also love to play in a club called Berghain in Berlin because I love the style of techno which the DJs play there. I have played in a few places recently that have been amazing. I very much enjoyed playing in India, Bosnia and Estonia. A particular event in a club in Paris called The Arches stands out because the people were so responsive to the music and the energy was amazing.

I think there are many artists who do justice to electronic music. There are a few House producers that stand out. One is Motor City Drum Ensemble, and another is Moodyman. I love what they do because it has musical elements in it rather than just purely electronic sounds produced all with modern equipment. It is outside the box so to speak and I like this about it. Todd Terje is another great producer who does electronic music justice. Bugz in the Attick, Nathan Haines and Marc-De-Clive-Lowe are a few others also.

I think that the quality in the music is amazing and I have seen some very talented DJs play, The music is constantly evolving as it is everywhere and I think that if house and techno legends play then this will continue to develop the scene and I think that some incredible artists will come from Arab talent and fully support them.
 

I would love for my music to change all wars and create world peace over night, however, I do not think this will happen! I just hope that my music can change people’s attitude to female DJs and show that although in the past the industry was mostly male orientated, being female or male has no relevance to the quality of music and how good a DJ is. Females tend to get pigeonholed into playing only one style of music and this is not the case at all. I would hope I can represent the female race well and that this can play a small part in changing this old attitude.

Rebecca will be playing a set in Space Ibiza next month as well as in Istanbul and Bahrain among others in the future. She will be part of world tours for Ministry Of Sound as well and other parties. She is currently working on house and techno material with nu jazz and instrumental Brazilian influenced music. Rebecca Vasmant plans to release her latest album by the end of 2011.
