- SAN JOSE, California: Robert Guerrero has had to pull out of his upcoming WBA super lightweight title fight against Marcos Maidana with a left shoulder injury.
Golden Boy Promotions announced the cancelation of the Aug. 27 fight on Thursday. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer says Guerrero injured himself sparring on Wednesday. He will have an MRI later Thursday.
Schaefer says Guerrero’s camp fears the injury could be a torn rotator cuff that could sideline him for “quite a while.”
Schaefer says Golden Boy would like to stage the fight in the future if possible. The fight was scheduled to be in San Jose, where many fans were excited to see Guerrero fight in his native Bay Area.
Maidana holds the WBA title, while Guerrero is the WBA and WBO interim lightweight champion.
