- MAKKAH: Domesticated pets could be a joy for those who revel in animals, but preferring to bring a ‘creepy crawly’ into one’s household needs not only a penchant for reptiles, but also a level of courage that would not just melt away when the ‘pet’ needs to be petted.
The Makkawis are showing such pluck by bringing home a new pet of their choice — small Australian crocodiles. The sales of these aquatic reptiles, generally termed as creatures of wild — are on the up in the holy city and spiked just before Eid. Quoting Thamir Muhammad, a crocodile merchant, local daily Shams Wednesday said the sales of tiny Australian crocodiles went up by 60 percent this year compared to the previous one. He said a crocodile, which is a month old and about 30 cm long, costs SR350. Thamir, however, warned that when these animals grow up they would constitute real danger and should be given to the zoos. But whether Thamir’s advice is heeded, is just a wild guess.
