- RIYADH: A student in Al-Eraija Secondary School for Girls in Riyadh has been detained after admitting to causing a fire in her school last month.
- Students and teachers got burned, Al-Eqtisadiah daily reported,, quoting a Civil Defense source.
The source said that Civil Defense investigators had questioned 30 students and schoolteachers.
The directorate general of Civil Defense, the Prosecution and Investigations Commission and other concerned authorities had conducted the investigations, according to the source.
The source did not identify the girl but said she had admitted to causing the fire. “She is currently being detained at the Social Observation Home for more questioning after which she will stand trial,” he said.
The source noted that the number fires in schools and other educational facilities had increased remarkably of late. He warned that the dangers of these fires were not only limited to deaths and injuries by burning but also by causing a state of communal panic that might lead to a stampede. “Panic and an ensuing stampede can result in more deaths and injuries than those caused by the fire itself,” he said.
