It is important to understand that skin care concerns are directly linked to the different stages of our lives. If you want to look your best, all you need to do is solve skin problems as they appear and work to prevent them from appearing.

Nilo Haq, a beauty expert and makeup artist, gives her expert opinion on the issue and shares her secrets to achieving perfect skin. According to Haq, people in their 20s are in the most crucial phase of skin care and must do everything they can to ensure that their skin is protected from the sun.

“The number one approach young adult women in their 20s to 30s can do to prevent skin damage is to wear sunscreen. It doesn't necessarily have to be by itself, you can use two-in-one products like a foundation that has SPF in it or a day cream that contains SPF 15 at the minimum," she said.

Haq says young women who complain about dark under eye circles, the appearance of fine lines and adult acne often turn to anti-wrinkle creams or expensive cosmetic procedures to correct their skin problems. However, she says skin care starts from the inside and people should ensure they are drinking enough water, eating well and following a good skin care regimen that consists of cleansing, moisturizing, exfoliating, nighttime treatments and skin protection.

Many young women in Saudi Arabia complain that their skin deteriorates due to the excessive use of makeup. During the wedding season, women often wear makeup constantly for three to four days and complain of pimples, sore skin and rashes that even foundations can’t cover.

“Wearing foundation for three to four days is not the cause of pimples, sore skin and red rashes in most cases. It is a combination of wearing too much foundation, where your skin can’t breath, and not washing it off completely before you sleep," said Haq.

If you get your makeup done professionally or at a salon, make sure they use clean and sanitized tools and products, advises Haq. “My suggestion would be to bring your own sponge, foundation brush and foundation when getting your makeup done."

Prevention should start immediately and preventive measures include eating an ample amount of vegetables and skin-friendly foods such as blueberries, green leafy vegetables and green tea, all of which are a good source of antioxidants. Fish can also provide the omega-3 fatty acids that skin needs to be healthy. When buying makeup, try to use products that contain niacinamide, an ingredient that helps prevent further damage to the skin, and look for foundations and concealers that are non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic.

Haq also recommends a natural, homemade mask that even Hollywood celebrities swear by. Made up of a mixture of ground oats, full fat yogurt, a bit of honey and a few drops of rose water, the mixture adds moisture to the skin and restores its natural radiance.

“I love this mask and apply it to my face regularly. It helps to brighten up my skin and makes it soft and supple.”
