The student, eight-year-old Mohammed Abu Tarik, succumbed to his injuries following the accident that took place at 2:30 p.m. on Farazdak Street in the heart of the capital on Saturday.

Mohammed Badr Alam, principal of the Bangladesh International School (Bangla section) that Tarik attended in Riyadh, said the tragedy occurred when a few of his students were returning home after school on Saturday.

There were 13 students in the vehicle and 12 of them survived the accident with minor injuries. They were discharged from hospital following treatment.

Alam said the vehicle the students were traveling in belonged to a private owner who transport school children. “It looks like a head-on collision when both were crossing the signals at Farazdak Street,” the principal said.

Police took the two drivers involved in the accident into custody.

Mohammed Hussein, principal of the Bangladesh International School (English section) in Riyadh, told Arab News that it was shocking news to staff and students.

The school held an assembly to remember Tarik. The meeting was sponsored by Amra Khojan Society, based in Riyadh.

In a similar accident, in Sakaka, Bangladesh couple Abdul Kareem and his wife Ayesha Sultana died in a car accident. Their three children, including six-month-old daughter Kareena and sons Alis and Jubair, all survived. However, the two boys are in a critical condition at Sakaka General Hospital.

Emdad Ul Haque, labor counselor at the Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh, said it was a miracle Kareena had escaped unhurt.
