- Discover the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a groundbreaking reality TV show that gives people in front of the screen the chance to see what lies within the hidden corners of Saudi Arabia, from the depths of the Red Sea and the Arab Gulf to the vast deserts which cover more than half of the country and the mountaintops very few have explored.
The first-of-its-kind Arabic documentary with English subtitles “Discover KSA” takes viewers on an adventurous journey across the Kingdom and delivers a unique experience of this fascinating country.
Celebrating the beauty of courtiers and discovering exotic places is the vision of the program, according to Khulud Abu Homos, senior vice president for programming at OSN and executive producer of the show. “This show also has an imbedded message that we want people to see. We humans are doing a lot that can damage our planet, and we don’t even know it. Through this show we’ll be showing these habits that are harming us and making our country an unpleasant sight,” she said.
“Our future is very relevant to our environment, and when I think of this show, I think of celebrating the nature in the Gulf as well as educating people and making them aware of being green. This is why we also launched a campaign with it and called it ‘Love the Gulf,’” she added.
“This campaign is made to educate people about the impact of plastic on turtles and underwater creatures. We also show them how to protect the water and keep it healthy. Maybe, from an artistic point of view, people might actually understand the importance of environment in an entertaining way,” said Abu Homos.
The show was Ahmed Sahab’s idea, and OSN accepted to buy the program and air it through their channels. The show’s concept is to bring the audience a whole new perspective of what lies within the hidden corners of this wondrous land.
Not many Saudis and people living in the Kingdom know what we have when it comes to tourism sites and what the country has to offer for adventurous travelers, according to Sahab. “It’s a program that helps people discover Saudi Arabia. It is an educational program, just like the ones that are offered by travel channels,” he said.
“The program takes the audience to caves, volcanoes, deserts, islands and lakes, which are the places Saudis never go to, because they always like to visit cities such as Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam,” he added.
The show is like an adventure for the people who watch it and the people who are standing behind the camera, because to them it’s also a new place to explore. “We don’t stay at luxury hotels and eat restaurant food; we tend to camp in the wild and cook our own food to live the adventure to it’s highest limit,” said Sahab.
“Most of the places I visited are areas I heard about. I just take my crew and discover the place with the camera rolling, so people would hear our reaction and comments during the discovery,” he added.
The idea of the show came to Sahab five years ago, when he started camping trips along with his friends. “I was in the media, so I always had this curiosity about my country, and I wanted to present to people an idea for in-house tourism instead of heading to Europe or Asia for their vacations,” he said.
“I approached the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, from whom I never got a feedback about my idea, so I started approaching TV broadcasters. OSN chose to buy and sponsor the program,” he added.
The program is part of OSN’s ongoing efforts to support young Arabic talent to create premium productions.
Discover KSA is premiering on OSN Yahala! HD on Fridays at 7:30 p.m.
