- LONDON: Police say a multimillionaire fraudster wanted in the UK has been deported from the Dominican Republic, where he fled to four years ago.
Michael Brown was sentenced in his absence to seven years in jail in 2008 after he was convicted of fraud. Four former clients, including an ex-chairman of Manchester United football club, had accused the Briton of duping them out of about 40 million pounds ($65 million).
Brown was arrested in the Dominican Republic in January and deported to Madrid, Spain, on Saturday.
City of London police said Sunday that they will now seek a warrant to bring him back to Britain as soon as possible.
Brown donated about 2.4 million pounds to fund the 2005 national election campaign of Britain’s Liberal Democrats, the third-ranked party’s largest ever donation.
