This is with reference to the report “Drowsy driving put to sleep 4,000 motorists in one year” (Feb. 13). It is very true that many road accidents occur due to drivers feeling drowsy while driving. In this case the authorities cannot obviously be blamed. It is the responsibility of every individual to take precautions. Instead of forcing oneself to sit behind the wheel, one should take a nap so as to avoid any mishap. The practice of driving while feeling the need to sleep puts the driver and others at extreme risk.
I remember reading a report, which said that in Europe driving while fatigued, caused more road fatalities than drunk driving. Unfortunately, there is no test to determine sleepiness. People should avoid driving if they find it difficult to focus on the road due to fatigue and sleepiness.
Drivers normally get drowsy during long trips because they are sleep-deprived. In case of long routes, they should try to take short naps so as to remain alert on the road. The nap should be short because sleeping for more than 30 minutes causes disorientation. In such cases, it is better to stop driving and take complete rest. Caffeine taken through soft drinks or tea/coffee can induce temporary alertness but it takes at least half an hour for the effect to set in. However, this may not have any effect in case of over-exhaustion or people who are long used to it. I believe, another person sitting by the side is of immense help, especially during long trips. He can keep an eye on the road and keep the driver awake by talking. It is better if he can drive as well, so that both can take turns to drive every couple of hours or after every 150 kilometers.
