This is in response to the report “Erodgan defiant despite Gul’s hope Twitter ban will go” (March 24). I really don’t understand as to what Prime Minister Erdogan is up to. He has done so much for his country over the past 10 years that even his bitter critics cannot say a word against his achievements.

What has changed for him? He has started acting strangely. His current policies are not only harmful to him and his AK party but also to Turkey. The Erdogan decade has been undoubtedly the era of unprecedented development. Such measures will only undo what he has done so far.

I maybe not very well versed with the political dynamics of Turkey but somehow I feel that Erdogan is overreacting to the slightest of the criticism and opposition. This is the mentality of a person who has sincerely worked for the betterment of his people. This maybe a normal behavior for ordinary people dealing with each other but not very acceptable when it comes to a public figure or a national leader.

It is also true that certain so-called secular elements who are not happy with the idea of a party with Islamic leanings ruling the country are hell bent on rocking the boat. Unfortunately, Erdogan is providing them with the opportunity to do so. Prime Minister Erdogan must realize that gagging media has become an old tactic. Such measures would not help in today’s world. Banning Twitter will not help him. There are many other platforms that can be used for the same purpose. Instead of taking such extreme measures, he must let the judiciary do whatever is required. This is in the larger interest of the people of Turkey. — Lala, Jeddah
