The Cairo International Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday. Here is a rundown of the movies set to screen at the 10-day event.

  1. ‘The Irishman’
    ‘The Irishman’
    The film tells the story of a former henchman who claimed to have killed more than 25 people on the orders of a mafia boss and a truck driver union leader.
  2. ‘Judy’
    ‘Judy’
    “Judy,” helmed by British director Rupert Goold, is a biographical drama film about American singer and actress Judy Garland.
  3. ‘Sin’
    ‘Sin’
    The Russian film “Sin” centers on the renowned 16th century Italian painter and sculptor Michelangelo Buonarotti.
  4. ‘The Swallows of Kabul’
    ‘The Swallows of Kabul’
    The French animated film gives the Algerian author Yasmina Khadra’s 2002 novel a beautiful re-imagining. It tells the story of young lovers who try to make the best of the fact that their freedom is severely restricted under the Taliban.
  5. ‘Abou Leila’
    ‘Abou Leila’
    The movie, helmed by the Algerian Amin Sidi-Boumediene, is about two childhood friends who cross the desert in search of Abu Leila, a dangerous terrorist.
  6. ‘Scales’
    ‘Scales’
    The fantasy film, directed by the Saudi filmmaker Shahad Ameen and shot in Oman, tells the story of a young girl living in a village with a tradition of sacrificing female children to mysterious sea-dwelling creatures.
