The must-see films at Reel Palestine

For its 8th edition, the Reel Palestine film festival at Dubai’s Cinema Akil will screen 24 films from Jan. 28 to Feb. 6, 2022.

  • ‘Huda’s Salon’

The tense drama, set in occupied Palestine, was directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad and focuses on a salon that recruits Palestinian girls to work for the occupation’s secret service by blackmailing them.

  • ‘The Stranger’

Palestinian director Ameer Fakher Eldin’s debut feature is about an unlicensed doctor who encounters a wounded man in the war in Syria.

  • ‘Jaffa, Mother of The Stranger’

This Raed Duzdar-directed documentary is based on the oral histories of Palestinians from Jaffa, an important economic and cultural hub in the region before the Nakba.

  • ‘Waiting for Gaza’

The drama is the second feature from filmmaking twins Arab and Tarzan Abu Nasser, who confined themselves in their tiny Paris studio where they recreated a mental picture of Palestine.

  • ‘Farha’

Darin J. Sallam’s film tells the story of 14-year-old Farha in Palestine in 1948, who watches from a locked pantry as catastrophe consumes her home.

  • ‘Siri Miri’

Two friends turn to Siri in order to spice up their monotonous life, only to find out that Siri is oblivious to their unique situation in this Luay Awwad-directed short.
