  • Neymar moved to Saudi Arabia last summer but suffered a season-ending knee injury in October

RIYADH: Al-Hilal and Brazil star Neymar has revealed he hopes to be back playing football “very soon” as he continues his recovery from injury.

The 32-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona star moved to Saudi Arabia last summer but suffered a season-ending ACL knee injury on international duty in October.

At the Esports World Cup at Boulevard Riyadh City on Tuesday, Neymar — an avid gamer — played for about an hour and a half at a live, sold-out show match. Team Neymar Jr defeated the recently crowned Esports World Cup Club Champions Team Falcons 2-1 after winning show matches in Counter-Strike II and TEKKEN 8, with their opponents taking the honours in Rocket League.

Speaking after the esports show match, the Neymar revealed his desire to be back on the football pitch for club and country as quickly as medically possible.

Neymar said: “I’m hoping to be back very soon. We don’t have a definite date yet, but I’ll only return when I’m 100 percent ready.

“I haven’t returned to training yet, but I’m making good progress. It’s been a challenging period for me — this wasn’t an easy injury — but I'm working hard to come back stronger and play football again.”

At the end of last season, Al-Hilal manager Jorge Jesus revealed the timeline for Neymar’s return: “We’re hopeful he might be ready to rejoin the team and start practicing by September or October,” Jesus said.

“He’s a star player, he possesses exceptional talent. Unfortunately, I can’t provide a definitive answer at this point — injuries like Neymar’s typically require 10 to 12 months for recovery.”

Neymar, who has part ownership in Brazilian esports outfit Team Furia, visited the Esports World Cup as a fan in July to watch the Dota2 Riyadh Masters and Counter-Strike 2 tournament finals. He was pictured cheering loudly as he watched the elite action unfold at the 8,000 capacity SEF Arena at Boulevard Riyadh City.

Being able to participate as a player during the Esports World Cup was something the Brazilian thoroughly enjoyed. The inaugural Esports World Cup — which features 22 games across 21 titles over a two-month period, complete with a record-breaking industry prize pool of $60 million — concludes with the closing ceremony this Sunday.

Neymar said: “The Esports World Cup is a great opportunity for the country, especially in terms of the visibility it can generate. It allows people to see what Saudi Arabia is really like. “I’ve learned a lot of positive things since coming here. It’s a fantastic country, with positive and happy people, and I hope this event opens doors for the world to experience Saudi Arabia.

“The arena here is incredible, man. Incredible. I’ve played here a bit, and it’s surreal to see what they’ve accomplished in just a few months by building it. I love the vibe here; everyone I’ve met is so nice and I made friends here.

“Saudi Arabia is doing something amazing with this project. It is truly pioneering in this industry.”

SPL champions-elect Al-Ittihad beat Al-Shabab 3-2 in last away game of the season
  • Moussa Diaby takes center stage with two memorable goals, the first of them in the opening minute, that put the Jeddah side in control
  • Al-Qadsiah tighten their grip on third place with a 3-1 win over Al-Orubah that moves them 4 points clear of Al-Nassr

RIYADH: In their first match since clinching the Saudi Pro League title last week, Al-Ittihad celebrated with a 3-2 win at Al-Shabab on Tuesday, their final away game of the season.

French winger Moussa Diaby took center stage, scoring two memorable goals that put the champions-elect in control, the first of which came in the opening minute. The former Aston Villa player, who arrived in Jeddah last summer, picked up possession on the right wing, cut inside the area and then, from a tight angle, fired an unstoppable shot into the opposite top corner.

His second, just after the half-hour mark, was delightful in its simplicity. Steven Bergwijn, still inside his own half, lifted the ball over the Riyadh defense to Diaby, who in turn lifted it over the goalkeeper, who was stranded outside his area.

Al-Shabab hit back in added time before the break through Yannick Carrasco, who controlled a Musab Al-Juwayr cross at the far post and fired home from close range.

Just before the hour mark, however, Bergwijn restored Al-Ittihad’s two-goal cushion. As the visitors streamed forward on the counter, N’Golo Kante fed the Dutchman on the left side, who produced another fine finish with a first-time shot.

That was not quite the end of the matter, though. Midway through the second half, Cristian Guanca made it 3-2, the Argentine heading home from close range after Daniel Podence hung a cross invitingly in the air.

Al-Shabab could not get another, however, and so Al-Ittihad recorded a sixth-successive win, which moved them nine points clear of second-place Al-Hilal, who travel to Al-Wehda on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Al-Qadsiah strengthened their grip on third place, and a spot in the AFC Champions League Two, with a 3-1 home victory over relegation battlers Al-Orubah. Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang contributed two late strikes that put him on 17 goals for the season. Julian Quinones delivered the opener, the Mexican marksman’s 20th league goal of the campaign.

Al-Qadsiah are now four points clear of fourth-place Al-Nassr, who will have a chance to close the gap when they play host to Al-Khaleej on Wednesday, after which there will be just one round of games left to play.

Al-Nassr unveils new crest to mark club’s 70th anniversary
  • New look unveiled in video showcase with the caption ‘A great legacy and history, and a promising future’
  • The crown atop the crest has gone, the name of the team is now simply ‘Nassr,’ and ‘Riyadh’ is added along with ‘1955,’ the year the club was founded

RIYADH: Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr on Monday unveiled a new official crest, which club officials said is part of a refreshed visual identity in celebration of the team’s 70th anniversary.

A message posted by the team’s official account on social media platform X included a video showcasing the new design with the caption: “A great legacy and history, and a promising future. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary, here is the Al-Nassr logo.”

The redesign features several notable changes, the most obvious of which is the removal of the crown that previously sat atop the crest. The name of the team in English is now stated simply as “Nassr,” the prefix “Al-” used in previous iterations now dropped. “Riyadh” has been added at the bottom of the logo, referencing the club’s home city, along with the year in which the team was founded: 1955. The map of the Arabian Peninsula at the center of the crest remains.

The most recent significant update prior to this came on Oct. 15, 2020, when a laurel wreath around the sides of the crest and a yellow ribbon at the bottom were removed.

Al-Nassr was founded on Oct. 24, 1955, and grew to become one of the most prominent clubs in Saudi Arabia and the wider region. With two matches left to play in the league this season, they sit in fourth place, 13 points behind confirmed champions Al-Ittihad.

  • With 2 games left to play, the Tigers move 9 points clear of Al-Hilal with a 3-1 away victory over already relegated Al-Raed
  • Al-Hilal have 3 games remaining but an inferior head-to-head record means there is no way they can overtake their rivals

JEDDAH: Al-Ittihad were crowned champions of Saudi Arabia for the 10th time after a 3-1 victory at Al-Raed on Thursday.

The Tigers have two games left to play and are nine points clear of second-place Al-Hilal, who have three games remaining but an inferior head-to-head record, which means there is no way they can overtake their rivals.

As Al-Ittihad take the Saudi Pro League trophy back to Jeddah, just two years after their last title triumph, the focus now for Al-Hilal is the battle with Al-Qadsiah, Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli for second place and the prize of qualification for the 2025-26 AFC Champions League Elite that comes with it.

It looked as if there might be another twist in the title race when Oumar Gonzalez put bottom-place Al-Raed, who are already relegated, ahead after just nine minutes. The Cameroonian pounced on a rare defensive mistake from N’Golo Kante to fire home from close range.

With top-scorer Karim Benzema injured and watching from the sidelines, there might have been some concern in the dugout. But if Laurent Blanc’s men were rattled they did not let it show and in the 21st minute they were back on level terms, courtesy of Steven Bergwijn, after Abdulrahman Al-Oboud broke into the right side of the area and squared the ball for the Dutchman, who made no mistake.

It was obvious from the reactions of the Al-Ittihad attackers that they wanted more of the same and that’s what they delivered as they took the lead five minutes before the break. Unai Hernandez swung over a corner from the left and Danilo Pereira was the first to reach the ball at the near post, heading smartly past the goalkeeper.

From then, it was always going to be difficult for the home side to get back into it, and it was effectively game over just two minutes after the restart. Bergwijn chipped a pass, or perhaps a shot, through a crowded area and Al-Aboud was waiting on the goal line to bundle the ball into the net for the goal that sealed the win and the title.

Come the final whistle, the celebratory T-shirts with a “Champions 25” slogan were pulled on and the celebrations started in earnest. They might continue for some time.
