- No workers injured by the blast at 4 a.m. at Al-Jabsah gas plant’s export pipeline
- Syrian authorities reportedly implement additional measures to protect country’s oil and gas facilities
DAMASCUS: An explosion at a major gas pipeline in northeastern Syria early on Tuesday halted gas flows and disrupted supplies to several power-generation turbines, the state-owned Syrian Petroleum Company said.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the blast at Al-Jabsah gas plant was the result of a “deliberate act of sabotage,” the company said, and authorities were working to identify and pursue those responsible.
No workers were injured by the explosion, the company added, which occurred at about 4 a.m. at the facility’s gas-export pipeline. Repair teams were deployed and were said to be working round the clock to restore gas flows.
Wells connected to the pipeline were isolated, safety valves closed and the site was secured following the incident, the company said, adding that it was “coordinating with the Syrian Electricity Company to compensate for the shortfall through available alternatives.”
Syrian authorities also reportedly began to implement additional measures to protect the country’s oil and gas installations and pipelines.
“Targeting these facilities means targeting a service that reaches every citizen’s home,” the company said, adding that work would continue until the pipeline was back in service.
