MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh’s acclaimed and awarded portrayal of “Peshwa Bajirao I” has earned him a prize that has left some people a little bit surprised.

The 30-year-old actor has been named “Maharashtrian of the Year,” an honor bestowed by Marathi publication Lokmat and social media is having trouble wrapping its head around this, NDTV reports.

Ranveer was chosen by a jury of politicians Sushil Kumar Shinde and Praful Patel, activist Medha Patkar, lawyer Ujwal Nikam, businessman Harsh Goenka and filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.

Why they picked him — Ranveer Singh is a “Mumbaikar” of Sindhi origin — is what Twitter is still trying to figure out. “Maharashtrian of the Year” trended for a good part of Friday.
