There was no shortage of glamor during the press days at the North American international Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit as the three giant American companies displayed their shiny ware to the world.

The Corvette Z06, the new Mustang GT and Chrysler 200 S created enough buzz in American media.

However, it was Toyota which stole the limelight in Detroit with its new coupe concept, FT-1.

The concept was created by Toyota’s California-based team which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

The brief was to create “the ultimate sports car” but with reference to Toyota’s rich heritage which goes back to the 2000GT of the mid-1960s.

The concept is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive and illustrates a classic sports car proportions with near equal weight distribution.

The FT-1 has a formula-1 steering wheel, color head-up display and its name signifies “Future Toyota.”

There are no technical specifications revealed and no word yet about a production version in the making.

Rumor out of Detroit is that the FT-1 is the concept design for a new Supra.

Toyota insiders say that Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s chief executive can lap the Fuji circuit faster in a virtual FT-1 than he can in reality in his Lexus LFA race car.

The car is downloadable to the new Gran Turismo 6 racing simulator game. Toyoda used the game to approve the concept.
