This is with reference to the report “Hezbollah ‘training Houthis for new terrorist attacks’” (Feb. 26). The United Nations should step in to rein in Hezbollah and its supporters. This militant group is also behind the political instability and chaos in Lebanon. The UN and the international community should make Iran pay a price for supporting Hezbollah. With support from Tehran, it is fighting in Syria, active in Iraq and now reports suggest its role in Yemen. What else is needed to impose sanctions on Hezbollah and its regional backer Iran?

International efforts to restore peace in the region will not bear fruit without cracking down on such non-state actors and puppets in the hands of the Iranian regime. There was a time when Hezbollah commanded huge respect in the Arab world for its unwavering stance against the Zionist forces but now it has turned out to be a sectarian terrorist outfit, which has nothing to do with peace in the region.

What gets my goat is the world inaction over Iranian attempts to destabilize the region. The western attitude toward Iran is beyond comprehension. There are incriminating evidence against Iran but the world powers have turned a blind eye toward it and giving a red carpet welcome to this regional troublemaker.

Sometimes I feel that the Arab world is to be blamed for this scenario. The Arabs should accept their failure in effectively putting up their case against Iran. On the other hand, Iranian propaganda machine shrewdly worked to successfully achieve its goals.

If we look at the nuclear deal the western powers signed with Iran, we would realize that Tehran negotiated with the West over something that did not even exist. The Arabs should swing into action against all forces working to destabilize the Arab world. Instead of internal bickering, all Arab countries should put up a joint front before it is too late. There are reports about the division of Syria and Iraq along ethnic lines. Such divisions will only render the Arab world further weak and ineffective. The Arabs should wake up from their deep slumber and work together to protect their interests.
