RIYADH: Saudi Food and Drug Authority (FDA) inspectors seized about 244,000 kilograms of rotten food items during a special raids on food factories and warehouses.
Eight cases of commercial fraud were noted during the campaign and those responsible were penalized.
In Riyadh, 72 tons of food, including flour, cheese, frozen chicken and fish, pickles, olives, dried fruits and olive oil were seized due to manipulation of expiration dates and storing items in unhealthy environment.
In Al-Quway’iyah, authorities seized more than 168 kilograms of cheese, chicken and frozen fruit for the same reasons. In Tabuk, 2,992 kilograms of expired meat and rice unfit for human consumption were seized because insects were found in them. In Jeddah, 3,733 kilograms of dates, fish and frozen vegetables were also seized.
The FDA recently launched its inspection programs to make sure these companies comply with the rules and regulations in this regard.
