JEDDAH: The number of gas cylinder shops has increased in residential areas with the passage of time. However, a few citizens think they are a threat to public safety in residential areas, a ticking time bomb waiting for disaster to happen. They have demanded the removal of these gas cylinder shops to the outskirts of the city.
Talal Asmari, a Saudi citizen, said with the absence of controls and commitment of the relevant authorities, and no proper follow-up on the implementation of safety regulations, the risk of a disaster increases, as many shops are located near residential buildings.
He said it would be better if the authorities removed everything that can harm citizens and threaten their safety, just as they relocated car workshops and dumps to locations outside the city.
Another citizen, Abdullah Al-Zahrani of the Rawabi District, said the municipality or relevant authorities should consider the threat of leaking gas cylinders or defects in the installation of gas knob as problems, which can lead to a disaster for the houses nearby, or nearby gasoline stations.
Another resident, Mubarak Al-Harbi, said it is understandable that many are concerned about the presence of gas cylinder shops in residential areas. However, the removal of these shops would create a great problem for residents, as working hours of most people do not make it feasible to travel to the outskirts of the city to get their gas.
He said many people have health issues and need to hire people to fetch the gas for them. This would involve an increase in the cost, as already the cycle men who sell gas are charging SR25, when the original price is SR15.
He said instead of removing gas cylinder shops from the city, they can take alternative means to prevent accidents and fire. Fireproof cylinders may be adopted, and strict precautionary measures may be taken to prevent disastrous fires.
Another citizen, Ali Al-Qarni, said use of gas is necessary in homes and for that reason people keep more than one cylinder to save on trips.
Al-Qarni said there are many things that are threats to life, so removing the gas cylinder stations to the outskirt of the city is not a good idea.
He said it will lead in increasing prices and will be time-consuming. It is the responsibility of the cylinder shops, municipality and Civil Defense to ensure the safety and security of these gas cylinder shops and make them threat-free within the city.
A worker at a gas cylinder shop said if the policy on these shops change in any way, many people will definitely suffer, but people should not be worried about safety as the municipality and Civil Defense have measures in place for the security and safety of gas cylinder shops.
